People Power – A game of civil resistance

“People Power” is a non-violence game (simulator) that replaced the old ICNC game “A force more powerful” as the organization's non-violence teaching tool. People Power was produced for The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) by York Zimmerman Inc. In the game, you are going to fight for your rights against an opponent that controls the police, the army, the bureaucracy and even the media and you will do this using nothing but non-violence tactics. The game is meant to teach you to carry on with the legacy that Gandhi and other proponents of non-violent social change gave us, the legacy of non-violent civil disobedience.

The game People Power was produced over 3 years in co operation between game developers and different non-violence experts, including veterans from recent successful non-violence campaigns. Ivan Marovic, a founder of the Serbian resistance movement Otpor!, was for instance consulted to make sure that the game became as realistic as possible.

One of the producers behind People Power, The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC), is an organization who encourages and provides information about non-violence and non-military resistance to promote human rights. The other producer York Zimmerman Inc is a Washington based independent film and video production company. They specialize in producing movies about people and ideas that change the world.

The game People Power is based on real conflicts and what have worked in them. From the official description of the game you can read that ”the game simulates nonviolent struggles to win freedom and secure human rights against a variety of adversaries, including dictators, occupiers, corrupt regimes, and to achieve political and human rights for minorities and women. ”. The game is a further development from the first game where suggestions from the players of the first game have been incorporated. The game People Power is recommend for players over 14 years of age. It is available in English and is being translated from English into Arabic, Farsi, Russian and Spanish.
